good morning. i'm sunny hostin. >> and i'm rob nelson. north korea has drawn a bull's eye on america. its leaders have issued a direct threat that they will soon test a nuclear weapon and a long-range rocket, aimed at the u.s. >> there are signs that a nuclear test is in the works. and we know their missiles can now reach hawaii. but it doesn't appear they can combine them yet. >> defense secretary leon panetta says the u.s. is ready, though, to meet any provocation. how is all this going over in that region? abc's gloria riviera has just arrived in seoul. and, gloria, how concerned are the leaders in south korea? >> reporter: rob, here in south korea, there is not panic yet. but there is serious concern. yesterday, it was the u.s. today, north korea directed its threat in this direction. north korea warned there would

be, quote, strong, physical countermeasures against south korea if it takes direct part in the tougher u.s.-backed sanctions recently passed at the u.n. and analysts say american intelligence, international agency intelligence, it all concludes that the north koreans' missile capabilities are getting more sophisticated. slowly but surely. and that is a concern to south korea and to the rest of the world. well, gloria, what does all this tell us about the north's new leader, kim jong-un? >> reporter: with a new leader, there's a bit of hope that things will be different. of course, his father, kim jong-il was caught up in a cycle of threats and then tests and talks about denuclearization and walking away from the table. it looks as if kim jong-un, the new leader, is following in his father's footsteps, unfortunately. north korea appears to have turned its back on restarting six-party talks. the one country with an

influential card to play here is china, north korea's one ally. it's a big provider of food aid for north korea. and china supported the u.n. resolution, urging restraint. calling for north korea to get back to the negotiating table. and say it will reduce its assistance if north korea carries out another test. that's not what kim jong-un wants to hear. but it's new. and many are hoping it doesn't fall on deaf years. >> a provocative action, certainly with the eyes of the world, again on that country. gloria riviera, live for us in seoul, south korea. thanks, glory. the threat from north korea will soon be john kerry's headache. president obama's nominee for secretary of state, testified yesterday at a senate confirmation hearing on capitol hill. but he fielded more questions about iran's nuclear program and about syria and pakistan. kerry is expected to sail through the confirmation vote some time next week. and gun control advocates

are urging the public to get behind tough, new legislation, just unveiled yesterday. senator dianne feinstein introduced the law that would ban 157 types of assault weapons. the nra and their congressional allies are unlikely to approve them. and the senate has some new rules this morning to curb filibusters, which are used to block bills and nominations. senators overwhelmingly approved the new rule, which reduce but don't eliminate the number of times a filibuster can be used by the minority party. in return, the majority will to allow two minority amendments to bills. and rhode island statehouse, lawmakers applauded after passing a bill to allow gay marriages. rhode island is the only state in new england that does not allow them right now. the bill's future in the state senate, though, is unclear. no vote is currently scheduled

there. and new jersey's republican governor, chris christie, is getting some political support from an unlikely source. he's facebook's founder, mark zuckerberg, who headlined events for president obama's re-election campaign. he will host an event for christie next month at his home in california. the unbearable deep freeze menacing millions of americans is delivering yet another day of biting cold temperatures, as the dangerous winter weather blows into the east and south. you can now add more snow and ice into the frigid mix. abc's tahman bradley has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, the arctic air that's making life miserable for millions is marching south. in huntsville, alabama, salt trucks are standing by. they're prepping around knoxville, tennessee. >> we're expecting the worst. you always expect the worst. >> reporter: while the midwest and northeast remain frozen --

>> got 20 layers on. body warmers, hand warmers, foot warmers. >> reporter: a new round of ice and snow is bearing down on 15 states from ohio to alabama. this cold blast, which has taken over one-third of the country, is dangerous. look at what firefighters in chicago had to battle. weapon, that's burning ice. conditions weren't much better for firemen in lawrence, massachusetts. >> it's tough because we're running into frozen hydrants and frozen lines. >> reporter: a plane slipped off this icy runway. at least 11 cities from raleigh to atlanta, to chicago to seattle will have delays. roads are also a mess. icy conditions cause major accidents. >> we can't respond as efficiently as we would, you know, in the summertime. it does pose some obstacles. >> reporter: newark officials got an assist by the mayor, cory booker who moonlights as a

million vehicles sold in north america. the boeing 787 dreamliner is still grounded after a rash of mechanical problems. investigators say safety backups failed on at least one of the planes, allowing a battery fire earlier this month. nippon airways that has more 787s than any other airline, has canceled almost 500 dreamliner flights so far. and this week can't end soon enough for apple. its stock fell more than 12% yesterday after a disappointing earnings report. many analysts are now lowering their estimates for the company. apple is also terminated a subcontractor in china that was using under-aged workers. and we're getting our first look at the ashton kutcher film about apple founder, steve jobs. it will open in april on the anniversary of apple's founding. and it covers the early years of the company. in this clip, kutcher, as jobs,

was convicted of her death. >> now, two secret hearings from been held to address an unknown issue. levy's parents say they understand those they have to deal with a witness that may have lied during the testimony. a squatter living in luxury got free. a 23-year-old man from brazil quietly moved into the mansion in boca raton about a month ago. the $2.5 million waterfront property is owned by the bank. but the squatter is using an obscure law to lay his claim. and as you can imagine, his neighbors are outraged. >> nobody's happy. we paid a lot of money to live on this street. and this guy -- this guy is trying to pull something. >> the squatter simply had to file a legal notice, pay taxes and liens and openly live in the house. if the owner does not object and the bank does not take action, the house is legally his in seven years.

an uninvited visitor caused a buzz at the white house. a pesky fly decides to ovr around president obama's face as he was announcing the nomination for the s.e.c. it landed in his forehead. but this fly got a presidential pardon, unlike the one he famously splattered during an interview four years ago. and from l.a., a rescue worthy of hollywood. it featured a small dog and a somewhat elaborate zip line system. the pooch had gotten on to a small island in l.a.'s mcarthur park. it was slivhivering in the rain. but the rescue squad set up the zip line. no one knows who owns the dog. it doesn't have a microchip. and turning to england, a woman fell straight into a canal, that's right, while texting as she walked. she wasn't paying attention and said the gray ice looked like pavement. a passerby helped her out. and other than being embarrassed and a bit cold, she was fine.
